Carolina Fire Department

The Carolina Fire Department (CFD), located in southern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, has been serving its community since 1956. Originally incorporated as the Harrison Fire Department on September 11, 1956, the department was renamed to Carolina Fire Department in August 1960 to avoid confusion with another station of the same name in the state.

Initially, CFD served a predominantly rural area. However, during the 1980s and 1990s, the City of Charlotte annexed much of its original district. In response to these changes, CFD constructed a new station at 10101 Providence Road West in 1994. The following year, in September 1995, CFD merged with the Carmel Volunteer Fire Department after Carmel's district was largely annexed by Charlotte. Initially, the merged department operated from both the Carolina and Carmel stations, but eventually consolidated operations at the Carolina station.

In 2008, CFD built its current station at 9937 Providence Road West. This location now lies within the City of Charlotte, and the department's service area is divided into two approximately one-square-mile districts along the South Carolina border.

Today, the Carolina Fire Department operates as a volunteer organization supplemented by part-time staff, continuing its mission to protect the unincorporated areas of southern Mecklenburg County.
