The Matthews Fire & EMS Department, serving the Town of Matthews, North Carolina, has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1954. Originally established as the Matthews-Morningstar Volunteer Fire Department, it has evolved over the decades to meet the growing needs of the community.

Early History and Evolution

In 1954, the Matthews-Morningstar Volunteer Fire Department was formed to provide essential fire protection services to the then-rural community. As the town expanded and the demand for emergency services increased, the department underwent significant transformations. In 1971, the Union-Mecklenburg (U-Meck) Rescue was established, followed by the formation of Matthews Rescue & EMS in 1991. These organizations laid the groundwork for a more comprehensive emergency response system in the area.

Transition to a Municipal Department

Recognizing the need for a more structured and efficient emergency services framework, the Town of Matthews officially established the Matthews Fire & EMS Department as a municipal entity in November 2008. This transition marked a significant milestone, consolidating fire and emergency medical services under one umbrella to better serve the community.

Modernization and Expansion

Today, Matthews Fire & EMS operates as a combination department, utilizing a mix of full-time, part-time, and volunteer personnel. The department functions on a modified 24/48 shift schedule, ensuring round-the-clock coverage. As of October 1, 2020, the department boasts an ISO Class 2 rating, reflecting its commitment to excellence in fire protection services. Annually, the department responds to approximately 3,900 calls, including mutual aid to neighboring communities.

In preparation for the opening of Fire Station #3 in early 2025, the department expanded its career staff by 50% in July 2024, adding 14 new members. This expansion includes the appointment of three new Battalion Chiefs and 12 new firefighters, enhancing the department's operational capabilities.

Community Engagement and Services

Beyond emergency response, Matthews Fire & EMS is deeply involved in community outreach. The department conducts fire prevention education, offers station tours, and participates in various public relations events to foster community awareness and engagement. Through these initiatives, the department emphasizes the importance of safety and preparedness among residents.

With a legacy spanning over seven decades, the Matthews Fire & EMS Department continues to adapt and grow, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Matthews community.
