Cook's Fire Department

The Cook's Community Volunteer Fire Department (CCVFD), established on June 24, 1953, is a cornerstone of emergency services in northwest Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. As the eleventh volunteer fire department organized in the county, CCVFD has a longstanding tradition of serving the Shuffletown area of Charlotte.

Originally, CCVFD's jurisdiction covered a broad rural area. However, over time, much of this territory was annexed by the City of Charlotte, leading to a reduction in its service area. Despite these changes, CCVFD continues to operate from its station at 3122 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road, providing vital fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services to the remaining unincorporated regions.

The department is staffed entirely by dedicated volunteers. Its apparatus roster includes a variety of vehicles tailored to meet diverse emergency needs, such as:

  • Engine 1: 2004 Seagrave Marauder

  • Engine 2 (Reserve): 1993 Seagrave Commander II

  • Rescue 8: 1993 E-One Cyclone II walk-in

  • Tanker 4: 2015 International DuraStar / E-One

  • Brush 6: 2005 Ford F-350 4x4

  • Rescue 12: 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4

  • Marine 1: 2007 25' SVI fireboat

  • Marine 2: 2002 Zumro boat

In recent years, CCVFD has faced financial challenges due to changes in municipal boundaries and funding structures. These issues have sparked community discussions about the future of the department and the importance of sustaining volunteer-based emergency services in the area.

Despite these hurdles, CCVFD remains committed to its mission, relying on the dedication of its volunteers and the support of the community to continue providing essential services. The department's resilience and adaptability underscore its vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in its coverage area.
