Steele Creek Fire Department

The Steele Creek Fire Department (SCFD), established in 1954 as the Steeleberry Volunteer Fire Department, has been a cornerstone of emergency services in southern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Originally serving the rural communities of Steele Creek and Berryhill Townships, the department has evolved significantly over the decades to meet the growing needs of the area.
Early History and Evolution
In its early years, SCFD operated as a volunteer organization, providing essential fire protection to the local community. As Charlotte expanded and annexed surrounding areas, much of SCFD's original service territory was incorporated into the city. However, legislative changes in 2011 curtailed further annexations, leaving SCFD responsible for approximately 28 square miles of unincorporated land, home to over 17,000 residents as of the 2020 Census.
Modernization and Expansion
Transitioning from its volunteer roots, SCFD has developed into a fully staffed department. As of 2023, the department employs 66 firefighters, including part-time personnel, with plans to increase staffing to 81 upon the completion of new facilities. In response to growing demand, SCFD has undertaken significant infrastructure projects:
• Station #2: Located at 13227 Woody Point Road, this 5,580-square-foot facility features three bays and accommodates five firefighters. Equipped with the department's only ladder truck, it significantly reduces response times in its coverage area.
• Station #3: Situated at 16315 Youngblood Road, this 12,500-square-foot station includes three drive-through bays and facilities for eight firefighters. Designed to Charlotte Fire Department standards, it ensures compatibility in case of future jurisdictional changes.
Collaborations and Community Engagement
SCFD actively collaborates with neighboring agencies to enhance service delivery. Notably, discussions have been held to allow SCFD's Ladder Company 2 to operate from Charlotte Fire Department's Station #38, fostering interdepartmental cooperation.
Committed to community involvement, SCFD maintains an active presence on social media platforms, providing updates and safety information to residents. The department's dedication to transparency and public engagement underscores its role as a trusted community institution.
Through continuous adaptation and a steadfast commitment to service, the Steele Creek Fire Department remains a vital component of public safety in Mecklenburg County.
